Bach Vespers services

The remaining Bach Vespers events this year are:

Sunday 16 June for Trinity Sunday, cantata no. 176. This is part of the SWOS Festival – see below for details
Friday 25 October for Trinity XIX, cantata no. 48 ‘Ich elender Mensch’. This will be part of a concert at the Minster Church, Axminster (please note, this is a change from the date published in our September 2018 newsletter)

SWOS Festival

Friday 14 to Sunday 16 June

Sunday from 2.30pm, at St Andrew’s Church, Colyton
‘Come and sing’ Bach Vespers for Trinity Sunday. Cantata no. 176 ‘Es ist ein trotzig und verzagt Ding’.

Singers are invited to make up a choir to sing this cantata in its proper liturgical context on Trinity Sunday, 16 June. Bach expert Peter Lea-Cox, who is also a SWOS artistic adviser, will be the musical director.

Piano rehearsal 2.30–3.45pm followed by rehearsal with orchestra at 4pm. Tea will be available while the soloists and orchestra rehearse. The service begins at 6.30pm and will also include hymns (in English), Luther’s setting of the Creed, chorale preludes and orchestral music.

If you would like to take part, please apply by 1 June direct to Peter Lea-Cox, by email ( by phone (01297 553620) or in writing (Leigh Cottage, Shute, Axminster EX13 7QN), giving details of your voice (SATB) and your postal address. We will then send you a full set of music.

To offset expenses there is a fee of £10 per singer (£15 for a couple), which will be collected from you on the day. Please make cheques payable to South Wessex Organ Society.

All are welcome at the 6.30pm service, which is free with a retiring collection.
